Intro to Japanese Woodworking
Join us January 2-3, 2026 for a 2-day, Intro to Japanese Woodworking class, ahead of our intensive 7-day Timber Framing Workshop.
This class is meant to inspire & ignite interest in woodworking and joinery at a very high level. If you are not able to commit to our intensive Timber Framing Workshop, this is a great way to dip your toes into the exciting world of high end woodworking! If you are taking the longer workshop, this will be a great intro and primer.
Learning about the fundamentals of working with Japanese tools and joinery - we will practice joints and learn about their function on larger projects. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned woodworker, this class is aimed to help you level up.
This class will not have overlap with our intensive Timber Framing Workshop.
Topics Covered
Learn basic sharpening processes and hone your sharpening for efficient working.
Setting up and using a Japanese chisel
Understanding basic layout marks and the principles of cutting joinery
Using a Japanese handsaw to cut wood, understanding your body in relation to the saw, cutting to the line.
Use of the handsaw, drill and chisel to chop a mortise and cut a tenon.
Practice Joinery time trials, using time to force focus on joinery.
Learn about Kanna finishing and the benefits of the Japanese hand plane
Meals are not included with the 2-day Intro to Japanese Woodworking tuition.
Although we encourage Japanese tools for this introductory course, if you are unable to acquire tools and are still interested in the course - please reach out. High quality Western tools may be substituted.
